New and Revised
September 9-10, 2003 *
The Water Information
Coordination Program is pleased to announce that the Charter for
the Advisory Committee on Water Information (ACWI) has been
renewed. The revised Charter was signed by Secretary of the Interior
Gale A. Norton on May 9, 2003; published in the Federal Register on
May 19, 2003; and formally filed with the Congress on June 19,
2003. Now we are undertaking the review and approval of your renewals
and nominations for membership in the ACWI, through the Immediate
Office of the Secretary. *Pending Secretarial approval of the
membership, the re-scheduled 2003 annual meeting of the ACWI will be
held Tuesday and Wednesday, September 9-10, 2003 at the same location
as last year, the Days Hotel and Conference Center in Herndon,
Virginia (see http://www.dullesdaysinn.com for directions and map).
Please mark this important meeting on your 2003 fall calendar!
We thank you all sincerely for your responses to our requests for
membership information. Our goal is to have the full ACWI membership
approved prior to the September 2003 meeting. Your active input and
participation in the membership review process, as well as the annual
meeting, will provide important feedback to the Department of the
Interior, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and our other
Federal partners on many critical water issues. The recommendations
and products that result from ACWI and our nine active Subgroups,
provide strong evidence of the successful collaborations we continue
to have with our non-governmental partners.
The fall meeting will be chaired by Tom Weimer, Deputy Assistant
Secretary for Water and Science at Interior, along with Bob Hirsch,
Associate Director for Water at the U.S. Geological Survey. Special
topics suggested for this year's meeting include: Trends in water
programs and funding, Research and development for water security,
Contracting out and the appropriate Federal role in water data and
information, Implementation of Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDL's), the
Value of expert systems to make water monitoring data more accessible,
and a special session on Groundwater.
As always, we will be highlighting accomplishments of each of the
ACWI subgroups, including the National Water Quality Monitoring
Council; and providing updates on major Federal and inter-agency
programs. On our web site @ http://acwi.govi
you will find updated links to active ACWI member organizations, as
well as to ACWI Subgroups. Be sure to check out What's New, as
well as the ACWI
2003 page periodically for further details on this year's
meeting.
