Methods Board Meeting, Cincinnati, OH, Nov. 15-16, 2006
Notes from Physical Habitat Data Elements Committee
Wednesday, Nov. 15 Discussion
Overall goal today
Construct plan for developing data elements for habitat
Questions:
(1) What types of habitat should be included?
Approach:
- Construct data elements in context of ESAR
- Examine ESAR details – need contact/plan for interaction
- Build on result types appropriate for habitat
- Query experts from different types of protocols – lake, estuaries, etc.
- Build on endpoint types list started by Revital
- Develop matrix of common characteristics/ingredients and level of rigor (qualitative/quantitative, estimates/msmts, etc) from major protocols (LeAnne’s matrix, Mike Miller’s matrix)
- Identify stakeholders, partners, collaborators
- National fish habitat initiative—BRD, Aquatic GAP, AFS, TU, TNC
- USFS
- NOAA
- BLM
- BOR
- Distill list down into core habitat data elements (last thing to do, maybe next year)
What is the plan?
- Build on draft PHab data elements
- Build on linkages with ESAR standards
- Identify unifying concepts across protocols
- Expand draft modules (esp. 2.0, 5.0, and 7.0)
- More-specific definitions and “pick lists”
Goals
- MDCB, NWQMC, ACWI approval of pHab data elements list
- ESAR-compatible data elements list for pHab in 2007
- Present pHab data elements at NMC in 2008
How do we get there?
Meetings – probably need more than 2x year
Conference calls - ??
What resources do we need?
- Time
- Personnel (or volunteers)
Notes From Thursday Nov. 16
General notes on role of the Board relative to Physical Habitat
- Marketing
- Building capacity
- Facilitaors
- Clearing house
- Data standards
- Needs to be ESAR compatable
- Build a pic list
- Need a results and location modules
- Mike Miller matrix of comparison of Phab lists from various sources
Chuck Spooner: Need to contact Lockheed Martin who is leading the EPA ESAR PHab development.
LeAnn Astin: Question: Is there a formal document asking the Board to be the focus of this effort? Action: Eric contact Bob Hirsch (USGS), Gail Mallard (Council), and Donna Meyers (NAWQA) ASAP
Revital Katznelson: Need to work with Curtis Cude and matrices
LeAnn Astin : Need to look into relational database commonalities and field protocol matrix
Chris Lochner: Will the WIS efforts and PHab elements be related to Webservice?
