Volunteer Monitoring Program Directory

THANK YOU, volunteer monitoring community, for all that you do to monitor, protect, and restore our Nation's waters.

Known volunteer monitoring groups around the Nation are shown in the map below. We anticipate the number of programs and subprograms represented on this map to grow over time. A program is the main organization formed for a particular volunteer monitoring effort. A program may provide leadership, training, study design, data objectives, database management, equipment and other primary elements of a monitoring program for its own members and other subgroups.  Whereas, a subprogram implements monitoring methods of another, larger program. A subprogram is dependent upon a main program for major monitoring program elements such as equipment, study design, training and such.  For example, the Colorado River Watch Network is the main volunteer monitoring program that provides equipment, study design, data objectives, training and data management for 140 subgroups who in essence implement the primary program's program.

Other similar map efforts that collaboratively share this common directory are:

1. The Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring and Master Naturalist Programs in the US map at http://www.usawaterquality.org/volunteer/VolunteerMonPrograms/index.html prepared by Kris Stepenuck of the UW-Extension Water Action Volunteers.

2. The US EPA's National Directory of Volunteer Monitoring Programs.  Please consider listing or updating your group's information in this EPA directory by contacting Alice Mayio.

The MAP LEGEND is in the top, left corner of the map. There you will find the RED circles represent monitoring programs and the BLUE diamonds represent monitoring subprograms.

We need your help to ensure this directory stays current and relevant!
